Labor Changes in Spain in the 1980s: An Analysis of Headlines from the Newspapers El País and ABC

This paper addresses the process of democratic transition in Spain, particularly during the 1980s, a period marked by profound political, economic, and social transformations, including labor market flexibilization, the introduc-tion of new technologies, and changes in employment contracts, influenced by European neoliberalism. It examines the role of the newspapers ABC and El País, which adopted opposing stances toward the PSOE’s economic policies. ABC, with its conservative perspective, emphasized labor conflicts and criticized the government for measures perceived as detrimental to workers’ rights. In contrast, El País, with a more pro-European and progressive outlook, downplayed the conflicts and highlighted the alignment of the reforms with the policies of the European Economic Community. The analysis is based on the headlines of both newspapers’ front pages, accessed through their respective archives, to explore how these media outlets reflected and shaped public perceptions of the political and economic transformations of this period.
