Liminal cartography in Manuel Rojas’s narrative of Valparaíso

The following paper examines the representation of the city of Valparaíso in the literary work of Manuel Rojas. It proposes reading Valparaíso as a liminal cartography, since it assumes the characterization of a “transient city,” where the possibility of change or transmutation takes place. This change occurs not only geographically or spatially, but also subjectively in the writer’s characters. In this sense, it is evident that Valparaíso blurs the concept of the city “border,” marked by the binary opposition between center and margin, to reveal itself through displacements and interbeing or liminal spaces. This constitutes a continuous movement that allows us to consider the relationship between writing and interstice.
